Abstract: This study examines the socio-economic impacts of forest rehabilitation under the Green Gicumbi Project in Gicumbi District, Northern Rwanda. It addresses the issue of persistent deforestation and the need for ecosystem restoration by assessing how forest rehabilitation influences local livelihoods. The research adopted a descriptive design, combining qualitative and quantitative approaches, and utilized questionnaires, interviews, focus groups, and document reviews. Results indicate a positive correlation between forest rehabilitation and improved community well-being, particularly through employment creation, increased forest productivity, and enhanced environmental awareness. However, benefits were found to be unevenly distributed, favoring those directly engaged with the project, such as forest owners and laborers, while vulnerable groups like the elderly and landless received limited support. The study recommends promoting inclusive reforestation schemes, supporting small-scale forestry for firewood and timber, and introducing alternative income-generating activities such as agroforestry, beekeeping, and ecotourism. These measures can ensure broader participation and enhance the sustainability of forest rehabilitation initiatives.

Abstract: Rabies remains a fatal zoonotic disease and continues to pose a critical public health challenge in Thailand. In recent years, adolescents have increasingly become prominent pet owners, reflecting broader social changes in pet-keeping practices. A survey by Mahidol University revealed that nearly half of Thai adults now choose to raise pets as family members instead of having children, while market research indicates that Generation Z, including adolescents under 18, dedicate significant time and emotional investment to pet care. This shift underscores the essential role of young people in ensuring responsible vaccination of household animals.This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge and preventive behaviors of Thai adolescents aged 13–18 years regarding rabies vaccination for pet dogs and cats. A total of 300 participants completed an online questionnaire comprising four sections: demographics, pet ownership, rabies knowledge, and vaccination behaviors. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square tests.Results demonstrated that 70% of respondents displayed moderate-to-high rabies knowledge; however, only 55% adhered consistently to annual vaccination schedules. Misconceptions persisted, with 30% believing indoor pets did not require vaccination. Additional barriers included vaccine safety concerns (15%) and financial constraints (20%). Statistical analysis confirmed a significant association between higher knowledge levels and consistent vaccination practices (p < 0.05).The findings highlight that while adolescents recognize rabies as life-threatening, knowledge alone does not ensure preventive action. Misunderstandings and practical barriers continue to hinder compliance. Targeted education, youth-centered campaigns, and improved access to affordable vaccination services are essential. Engaging adolescents as responsible pet owners will be pivotal in supporting Thailand’s goal of achieving rabies elimination by 2030.

Abstract: The study investigates the influence of traditional farming practices on sustainable land management in Gicumbi District, focusing on their role in soil fertility, crop yield, and alignment with sustainable techniques. Using a structured questionnaire administered to 400 farmers and analyzed through descriptive statistics and correlation analysis, the research identifies crop rotation (78.6%), intercropping (72.3%), organic composting (65.8%), and animal manure use (81.2%) as the most common practices. However, slash-and-burn remains in use by 28.7% of farmers, causing soil degradation.

In terms of sustainable land management, minimum tillage (66.9%), agroforestry (58.2%), and water conservation (74.5%) are widely applied, contributing positively to soil fertility and erosion control. Notably, 74.1% of respondents reported increased crop yields, and 62.8% observed improved soil fertility due to these techniques. Correlation analysis indicates strong positive links between land preparation and sustainable management (r = 0.721), crop diversity and soil conservation (r = 0.693), and soil fertility management and erosion reduction (r = 0.764), all significant at p < 0.05.

The findings demonstrate that combining traditional practices with modern conservation strategies enhances agricultural sustainability and resilience. While traditional methods play a vital role, their effectiveness depends on careful management and integration with contemporary soil conservation approaches. The study recommends targeted farmer training, promotion of agroforestry and organic fertilization, and discouragement of degrading methods like slash-and-burn. It further suggests that future research explore the long-term economic gains of integrating traditional and modern farming systems to strengthen sustainability in rural communities.

Abstract: Agroforestry systems that combine trees and crops on the same piece of land, such as silvopastoral systems that combine trees and pastures/cattle in one production unit. They also benefit farmers socially and economically, and are beneficial to biodiversity. Primary data will be collected through surveys, interviews, and field observations. Surveys will be administered to a representative sample of households practicing agroforestry to gather quantitative data on crop yields, income, and food security levels. Structured interviews with farmers, local agricultural experts, and community leaders will provide qualitative insights into the advantages and difficulties of agroforestry techniques. Field observations and soil sampling will be conducted to assess soil quality, biodiversity, and water retention changes. Focus group discussions will be organized to facilitate a deeper understanding of community perceptions and experiences with agroforestry. Combining these methods will ensure a comprehensive analysis of the District's socio-economic and environmental impacts of agroforestry. Agroforestry in Nyanza District has expanded significantly from 2018 to 2024, implemented in seven phases, with areas covered increasing from 54.241 hectares in Phase 1 to 1551.810 hectares in Phase 7, which alone accounts for over 38% of the total area under agroforestry. This progressive expansion indicates a shift from initial pilot programs to broader acceptance and implementation of agroforestry practices, as evidenced by the substantial increases in coverage during Phases 5 and 6. The integration of afforestation efforts along roadsides further emphasizes a strategic approach to land management aimed at achieving ecological and economic benefits. Climate data from 2019 to 2024 reveals a stable tropical savanna climate, with average annual temperatures around 19.8°C and distinct wet and dry seasons, supporting the viability of drought-resistant tree species and water conservation techniques within agroforestry systems. These systems leverage consistent solar exposure to enhance productivity, suggesting that careful selection of tree and crop combinations can improve soil fertility and water resource management, thereby boosting overall agricultural productivity sustainably. Institutions should provide training programs that educate farmers on the benefits of integrating trees into their farming systems, such as improved soil fertility, enhanced biodiversity, and increased resilience to climate variability.

Abstract: The study examined the socioeconomic impact of landslide disasters on rural communities in Kagogo Sector, Burera District, Rwanda—a high-risk zone frequently affected by landslides that destroy homes and threaten lives. The research aimed to identify the causes of landslides, analyze their socioeconomic effects, and assess the link between their occurrence and community welfare. Using a descriptive survey design, the study targeted 5,290 households, sampling 400 households and 5 local leaders through purposive, stratified, and simple random sampling. Data collection involved questionnaires, interviews, documentation, and field visits, with results presented using tables, figures, and charts. Analysis was conducted using descriptive and inferential statistics, including regression in SPSS. Findings revealed that landslides are mainly caused by heavy rainfall, soil composition, steep slopes, vegetation loss, and poor land use planning. Human activities such as deforestation, improper farming, mining, quarrying, and road construction exacerbate the problem. Landslides result in soil degradation, deaths, injuries, and homelessness, severely affecting socioeconomic conditions. Statistical analysis indicated that landslides negatively impact socioeconomic status by 91.39%, with strong agreement among respondents on the key issues. The study recommends that the government promote reforestation, strengthen Meteo Rwanda’s disaster preparedness, and that communities avoid practices contributing to landslides.

Abstract: In contemporary Thailand, adolescents face multiple stressors—from academic pressure and family expectations to social media and economic uncertainty—leading to elevated levels of anxiety, depression, and stress. Animal-Assisted Intervention (pet therapy) has been proposed as a complementary approach to emotional well-being. This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the impact of daily interaction with household pets on emotional health among 200 Thai adolescents aged 13–18 who regularly care for at least one animal. Data were collected via an online questionnaire (24 items across six domains) and analyzed descriptively (n, %, and % scoring 4–5 on a 5-point Likert scale). Findings indicate that 75–85% of respondents reported “high” to “very high” reductions in anxiety, depression, and stress when with their pets. The most common therapeutic activities were play/chase games (85%) and petting/hugging (80%). Overall, 80% judged pet therapy to be “quite” or “very” effective. These results support integrating Animal-Assisted Activities into school and community mental-health programs and developing training for educators, parents, and clinicians in pet-therapy protocols.
